When "Heavy Periods" Aren't Normal: My Experience with Hemorrhagia
For most of my life, I thought what I was experiencing was just… normal.
Doctors told me:
"Some women just have heavy periods."
But what does heavy actually mean?
For me, it meant:
- A super plus tampon lasting 45 minutes
- Planning my day around bathroom access
- Bleeding for 8 days, with 4–5 extremely heavy days
- Cramps so intense I could barely function
Looking back, this wasn't just a "heavy period." It was likely Menorrhagia - a condition defined by excessively heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding.
And yet, I was never diagnosed.
What Is Menorrhagia?
Menorrhagia is more common than people think, and often overlooked.
Signs can include:
- Soaking through a pad or tampon every 1–2 hours
- Needing double protection
- Periods lasting longer than 7 days
- Severe cramping or fatigue
Many women are told this is just part of being female. But it doesn't have to be.
When "Solutions" Fall Short
Like many women, I was offered birth control as the solution.
But in my case, it didn't help enough and it came with side effects I didn't want to live with long-term.
So I did what many women do:
I kept pushing through.
What Changed for Me?
When I started focusing on daily nutritional support, everything shifted.
Over time, my cycle transformed:
- From 8 days → 3 days
- From 4–5 heavy days → light flow throughout
- From debilitating cramps → pain-free periods
And perhaps most shocking of all:
- From changing a tampon every 45 minutes
- To using just 3 light pads across an entire day
(For reference, pads should be changed every ~8 hours for hygiene.)
Why This Matters:
We've normalized suffering when it comes to periods.
But your body is always communicating with you.
Heavy, painful cycles can be a sign that something is out of balance and that your body may need support, not suppression.
A Different Approach:
Instead of masking symptoms, I started focusing on:
- Nutrient density
- Consistency (daily support vs. reactive solutions)
- Supporting my body, not overriding it
That's ultimately what led to the creation of Neeshi.
Not as a quick fix, but as a simple, daily ritual that helps support your body over time.
If This Sounds Like You…
If you're:
- Planning your life around your period
- Experiencing extreme flow or pain
- Wondering if this is just "how it is"
It's worth exploring whether your body is asking for something more.
Because feeling better is possible.
